"Princess Anne of Britain, in an event where there is no substitute for skill and courage, became the European Three Day event champion at Burghley, Lincolnshire, England, recently.

The Princess, who was not a member of the official British team, was never out of the lead on her eight-year-old horse Doublet.

Competing against some of the leading riders in the world, in this, the thoughest test of horsemanship in the world, she led after the Dressage. Then came a daring speed and endurance phase - The cross-country section, where time and again she saved vital seconds by angling her approach to jumps. Despite knocking two jumps rather hard, the Princess moved into the final day and completed a clear round in the show jumping over a relatively easy course to win with 60.3 penalties. This was well ahead of Debbie West on Baccarat, who was second with 98.1 penalties.

The Princess, who is clearly in the running for a place in Britain's team to compete in the Olympic Games in Munich next year, has had a meteoric rise to the top in Three Day Event riding.

There is little doubt this is due to a combination of her own determination, the skill of her trainer Mrs Alison Oliver and the ability of Doublet.

Here it is clearly a pround moment for Her Majesty the Queen when she presents her daughter with the Raleigh Trophy for winning the individual title."
